2018 Valentine’s Day Gift Guide!

For the lovelorn and gift torn and how to come out smelling like roses on Valentine’s Day!

In our busy 24/7 Lives, it’s easy to forget to pre-plan just about anything unless “Alexa” tells you to. But, if you don’t want to appear “thoughtless” to those you hold dear… below are a few tips as well as a handy Gift Guide to items for him AND her you can STILL get your hands on to land those X’s & O’s.

Valentine’s Day has come to represent a day to reaffirm and express our appreciation for the people we love and care for; whoever they are. This has historically been symbolized with roses, chocolate and cards. If this is the ONLY day you give flowers to your significant other (and she expects it) … BUY FLOWERS for god sake! Otherwise, avoid that trap and attempt something more creative. In fact, here is my first V’Day Pro Tip- Avoid leaving buying / planning to last minute (like on your way home from work) it’s just ASKING for trouble; unless you don’t mind droopy roses, supermarket chocolate and a card for your hubby that says “I Love you Mom!”… So get cracking or get creative!

YES; but this does not necessarily mean it translates to a dollar value. Even between adults with cash to burn, a costly gift with no meaning to the receiver has little bang for the buck. Pro tip #2- AVOID getting too personal… Yes, believe it or not… If you don’t truly know his / her fragrance or bra size… DON”T DO it! There are so many options; stick with things the receiver WOULDN’T buy for themselves. A splurge item can be much more special. Buying both men and woman a special accessory weather it is jewelry (necklace or cufflinks) or an simple accessory (scarf or pocket square) can make a memory that will they will remember every time it’s worn. But, a gift needn’t be a physical item at all. Pro tip #3- The best gifts can be the memories you create. Activities are also great gifts. Tickets to a show or couples lessons are a great way to “gift” AND share the day. A memento becomes the gift on top. Just remember to announce or memorialize your activity-

Now that you have a grasp on how you COULD approach this sometimes nerve-racking day; check out THEO’s 2018 Gift Guide for both HIM & HER. I’ve listed items that are splurges and others that are easy on the wallet. Come in or call our Red Bank, NJ boutique for additional details, prices and availability. You can even leave a secret WISH LIST with us.

How to Wash & Clean your favorite fuzzy friends!

Cleaning our cozy-chic pieces can be a bit perplexing. For advice on how to properly care for our knits, we turned to the experts at WHITE DOVE CLEANERS in Tinton Falls, NJ. Joe Giarmita, the Operations Manager, gave us his best advice for keeping sweaters looking their best throughout the winter and beyond:

Do’s and don’ts for washing and drying: “With any knitwear, check the “care label” on the garment before buying. It should tell you everything you need to know about cleaning.” Knowing what’s required is an important part of a decision to purchase—especially when it comes to knits. Here’s what else you need to know:

  • Dry cleaning:  Send your piece to an experienced trusted dry cleaner. This process is designed to remove odor and stains while retaining shape and color, which can not be easily replicated with water and soap.

  • Embellished pieces:  If you have specially finished pieces such as the striped cashmere sweater with Fox fur trim by Harvey Faircloth $695 (avail at THEO) or sweaters with mixed materials (such as hand-painting, beading or fur), enlist an expert when cleaning. Infrequent or specialty cleaning is your best option to guarantee a long life for these uniquely crafted pieces.

Clean before storing: Before putting your sweaters away at the end of the season, give them a thorough cleaning, using airtight bins or space bags to keep out moths and other creatures. Also, forget the mothballs. Instead, we recommends storing sweaters with natural, herbal repellent alternatives like Moth Away. Plastic Bins and mothballs don’t mix and the smell will be impossible to get out of your clothing.

What to expect from gentle wearing: “Don’t be too worried if it  initially sheds,” says Alexander Meder, owner and buyer at THEO; a little shedding can be expected and will subside after a few wears, like this lavender 4-ply cashmere mock neck ribbed sweater by Katia Serafini $845 available at THEO. To reduce pilling, wash cotton-blend sweaters inside out and  beware of shavers, used to remove pilling, as they can damage the fabric.

Welcome to our style blog! I’m Tamara the Creative Director and Editor and on behalf of a group of talented stylists, buyers and fashion lovers at THEO, we hope to offer you fun, useful fashion and life-style information from contributors as diverse as our clientele.

Who we are is as much about whom YOU are and we believe in listening to our clients. Unlike most fashion blogs, you will read about our personal “life + style” journeys and we would LOVE to hear about yours. I’m not above “borrowing” a great quote …

“What you wear is how you present yourself to the world, especially today, when human contacts are so quick. Fashion is instant language.” – Miuccia Prada.

Lets face-it, having personal STYLE is a great gift in our 24/7 lives and who wouldn’t want to be effortlessly confident in our style? If it doesn’t take 60 years or a Stylist to discover what works, all-the better! Is anyone REALLY inventing new colors, new styles, new hemline; No? We KNOW this intuitively and yet we relish the runway, the new “issue”, and the next hot designer. Discovering what works for us, our bodies, our lives, sometimes requires a fresh perspective, an objective viewpoint to see things right in front of us… Sometimes it just takes a friendly reminder to get us moving forward.

In our blog, delivering on our mission, we dedicate ourselves to celebrating style and fashion, individuality and uniqueness, and looking at everything with a fresh perspective. We also believe that fashion design and yes personal style is not frivolous.

Until the next time-

Every woman can have a wardrobe that actually fits & flatters

Understanding and empowering the body you have is the key to finding clothes that fit and flatter. Using the power of illusion is the second. I don’t know about you, but I don’t have a perfectly proportioned body, but David Blaine might be pretty impressed with the tricks in my closet and the principles are not as complicated: Emphasize your best features and de-emphasize the not-so-good ones are about as tricky as it gets. Here they are:

  • Silhouette- the overall shape of the garment in relation to your own silhouette. Clothing should align with, not fight, your natural shape. Have great curves? Wear an A-line skirt. Have a wider waist or small hips? A pencil skirt might work better. To balance hips, wear cap-sleeve instead of a sleeveless top or balance the hips with a pant that is proportionate to the hip-width.  See proportion

  • Proportion- the relation of the size and “scale” of the items to each other and on you. You might also call this balance… Avoid dividing your silhouette in half when dressing. Visualize yourself as thirds from shoulders to toes. This is either one-third on top and two-thirds on bottom (as in a shirt or pants) or two-thirds on top and one-third on bottom (as in a dress). Overall height does not indicate your proportions. For example; you may actually be “Petite” on top and have long legs (or inseam) even if you aren’t a “true” Petite. This can make it more of a challenge to find a dress that fits. Tops and blazers might be long in the sleeve… or you may have the opposite problem. Shop accordingly. Consider two-piece dresses (coordinating top and bottom). A great option for different sizes on top and bottom-

  • Fit– wearing clothing that fits is possibly the easiest way to ruin a great outfit. Oversizing as a way to “camouflage” is a myth. The more volume your clothes have, the more you’ll appear to have. Squeezing into a size 6 when you’re a size 10 will only make you look as though you’re going to explode. Clothing label means little or nothing to sizing today. Try on several “sizes” and buy what fits best. If you really must, take the label out! Purchase quality apparel and buy it to fit it to the largest part of your body. Find a great tailor or seamstress and invest in tailoring those pieces to fit your body to perfection.

Make clothing work for you. If it doesn’t, it isn’t you. It’s just not the right clothing for you. Like the ideal hairstyle, accessories and color choices; consider how the details of your clothing best emphasis or mitigate the illusion you desire. For example, a fussy collar may not be the best choice to deemphasize a larger bust. Consider a jacket with no collar. Use color combinations and print size in strategic locations. Use accessories to balance the eye Clothing can create an optical illusion that helps us look taller and slimmer. Done wrong, well, we’ve all seen what that looks like.

With thanks to Tim Gunn.
